RESOLUTIONS

January 19, 2012

Dear Friends in the Florida Conference,

Greetings!

We would like to invite you to consider directing your thoughts to the birthing of God's hopes and dreams for the Florida Conference in the form of resolutions to be submitted to the all Conference meeting to be held at the Community Church of Vero Beach on Friday & Saturday, May 4-5, 2012.

The Conference welcomes resolutions from churches, ministry teams, groups, and committees in our Conference community.  Resolutions should reflect your issues of concern regarding the kinds of initiatives and commitment that you would like the Florida Conference to embrace.  Please consider submitting a resolution for the Conference’s consideration.

The guidelines approved by the Board of Directors for submitting resolutions are included.  Please note the time lines involved.  These dates will make it possible for information about all resolutions to be received by churches for consideration in a timely manner before the May gathering.  Resolutions must be submitted to the Resolutions Committee c/o Florida Conference, 924 N. Magnolia Avenue, Suite 250, Orlando, FL 32803 by March 1, 2012.

We look forward to seeing what hopes and dreams emerge from this process.

Blessings to you in this season of new beginnings,

Rev. Dr. R. Steven Hudder, Moderator of the Florida Conference

Resolutions Process for the May 2012 Conference Gathering

The Executive Committee serves as the Resolutions Committee.

Individuals, churches, committees, the Board of Directors and ministry teams in the Conference should be informed of the resolution process for the May 2012 Conference Gathering.

Resolutions are to include the reason for the resolution, background information, who is submitting the resolution, and the resolution itself.

Resolutions that are to appear before the UCC General Synod may also be considered as deemed appropriate.

Resolutions must be submitted to the Resolutions Committee at least three months prior to the May Conference meeting.  [By March 1, 2012]  The resolutions committee may submit resolutions to be considered.  The committee then determines whether to accept or reject each resolution submitted.  If a resolution is rejected, the committee must give the reason for rejection, or return it to the submitter with recommendations for revision.

Any resolution that is rejected may be brought before the May Conference meeting from the floor.  Up to five minutes (without debate) will be given to the Resolutions Committee to explain why the resolution was rejected.  The body then must decide by 2/3 vote whether or not to consider the resolution.

Resolutions will be communicated to the churches at least 6 weeks before the May meeting.

Resolutions of an urgent/critical nature may be submitted to the Resolutions Committee up until the day before the May Conference meeting, May 2, 2012.

Peter L. Cheney Award

December 19, 2012

Dear Friends:

Through the action of the Church and Ministry Committee during the 1998 Biennial Meeting, the Florida Conference of the United Church of Christ inaugurated the Peter L. Cheney Award.  This is to commemorate the extraordinary and exemplary commitment to God through his outstanding service as a layperson in our Conference.

Throughout his lifetime, and in several conferences of the United Church of Christ, from Maine to Florida, Peter Cheney manifested a unique integration of his spiritual, personal and professional life.  Service was the essence of his being.  Peter created a diverse legacy of participation in the local church, Conference and General Synod.  At the same time, he established a legendary reputation within his professional career of community and county government.  Despite his outstanding public service, Peter's close-knit family maintained intense and mutual admiration, love and respect that testify to the importance he placed on familial ties.

Through this correspondence we are seeking names and stories of lay persons within our Florida Conference who, through their life and service, demonstrate the characteristics epitomized by Peter Cheney.  We encourage you to submit the name and description of the person, or persons, you wish to nominate for this award, using the categories listed and described on the attached document as your guide.

It is our desire and intention to select one recipient from all the nominees to receive this award to be presented at our next Conference Annual Gathering, May 4, 2012.

What a joy it will be for us to lift up in celebration the extraordinary gifts and contributions of our dedicated lay people.

Thank you for your cooperation.  Please submit your nomination(s) by

March 1, 2012 to:
